With their quirky image and unique sound, it won't be long until Cornish three-piece, Rosie and The Goldbug are the buzz band, and are being played at full volume on everyone's stereo. I talk to the band's front woman, Rosie Vanier.
Plum Woodard: How did you come up with the name, Rosie and The Goldbug?
Rosie Vanier: For a while, I was obsessed with Edgar Allan-Poe. There was a story called The Gold-Bug and I was fascinated by it. I love Scarab beetles, I think they look incredible. Pixie (RATG's bassist) and Plums (on drums) are the Gold-Bug; a driving machine, like a big Scarab beetle! And I've always liked names like Alice in Wonderland or Siouxsie and The Banshees.
PW: Tell me about your sound.
RV: Since teaming up with Jim Eliot (Kish Mauve) our sound's changed for the better. We're simple country kids, but he brought a bit of London scuzz to our sound. We use lots of synth and have the drums and bass in the foreground, rather than underneath. I sing and roll around like a maniac. We think, 'fuck it! Let's be noisy!'
PW: And your image? What was it like doing the shoot for Ponytail?
RV: The clothes blew my mind! I can see why couture is so addictive. I feel like myself when I'm dressed up, it's the actress in me. I was brought up in charity shop clothes and hand-me-downs. Growing up on Bodmin Moor, the landscape is really barren. I guess that's what our signature black and white represents, with splashes of red over the top. At my primary school, the only colour was this sparkly red paper, and a big red pen my teacher had. I thought, 'Wow! Red! It's the most amazing thing!' I love red; it makes me really happy. The shoes I wore in the shoot were by Christian Louboutin. I didn't want to take them off!
The album is called 'Rosie And The Goldbug' and is out 15th September.
