I have only come across Thrush Metal recently while watching a show at Rough Trade East record store, just off Brick Lane. There it was their debut ep in full view not to be missed by anyone. It isn’t just 4 pussies on the front cover that attracted my attention, but to me it was the whole idea behind it, the packaging the nods to Thrash metal but also to punk (the band’s music is more punk than metal) all in a very funny way. This is a band all 14 year olds ought to aspire to (imagine the chaos….).
Their ep (500 copies hand numbered) is available in good record stores or to order from them online HERE.
I caught up with them at their recent show at Macbeth in Hoxton.
B: Thrush Metal, your band name is it derived from the 80’s term Thrash metal?
Alice: (Nods to confirm) we went to a metal festival called metal camp three years ago and just fucked around and…..
B: What were you doing in metal camp? Is metal your most favourite music style?
Alice: Yes that’s how we met (later on they professed to like Suicidal Tendencies, Slayer and Pantera)
Emma: We did not know how to play instruments or anything
Alice (boasting): So we started a band, make it our own genre and call it Thrush Metal.
Laura: And it’s nothing like metal at all (laughter).
Alice: We don’t want to be stuck on one thing; we would like to incorporate loads of styles.
Laura: Like Spice Girls (laughs).
B: You guys know each other already like ten years?
All: Yes.
Alice: They are cousins (points at Laura and Isabella)
B: Where did the idea come from to actually start a band?
Alice: All our friends were in bands and we got jealous (laughs), and we wanted to join in on the fun so……
B: So you just have released your first ep, any particular reason why the vinyl is brown?
All: It’s maroon!!!!!
Alice: It’s like blood, like shit.
Laura: Shitty blood.
Alice: Is that what you are trying to get at?
B: Well I was going to ask you, I mean I could say so, but I rather hear it from you
Emma: We only choose it because Bad Brains had done this type of brown vinyl with the circles.
B: I do like the packaging, the cd, vinyl, poster and the sticker, but most of all the cover art.
Alice: Did that attract you?
B: Actually it did
Alice: You dirty pervert!
Laura: Dirty man.
All of them: Dirty old man……(laughter)
B: I know, there I am walking in the record store and this cover just pulls me straight towards the ep….. and wondered what’s that about?
Laura: it’s about us all really….
B: A lot of what you do is tongue in cheek, but where do you draw the line so you are not taking the piss?
Laura: We do
B: Draw the line or take the piss?
Alice: You’re taking the piss out of us (laughs)?
Laura: I don’t know, I think we’re starting some revolution shit (more laughter).
Alice: We haven’t drawn the line yet, so
Laura: A fine line
Alice: What’s our next cover going to be?
Laura: I dunno, some venereal disease…….
Alice: Nah, we get our balls out
Isabella: No it’ serious, very serious (and pads me on the leg to emphasize her point).
Laura: Well we are having fun and we are friends so whatever.
B: You are in the middle of a tour with Cerebral Ballsy, what’s next?
Emma: We are going to do some festivals and write more songs. We are working on a Spanish song.
Isabella: We have done it actually.
Emma: Isabella speaks Spanish and Laura sings it well.
Alice: With our songs we don’t want to be confined to one genre.
We are doing the red Bull tour in Sept., during the day they skate and in the eve we play with some other bands.
